Encountering souls and opening minds so that all students succeed.
Math
Mathematics is another core subject and is an important focus of the Ministry of Education and Niagara Catholic.
In the primary grades, students focus on recognizing numbers, learning patterns, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. They get an early look at important life skills like financial literacy, and they are also introduced to geometry, measurement, and coding.
Classroom teachers play an important role in ensuring student understand these concepts. By modelling a love of math and learning, they work with all students to ensure they succeed. When additional support is needed, they work with the child and, when possible, the family, to support this goal.
Teachers also play an important role in making sure math lessons are a positive experience for all students. By setting a tone that all students can learn and succeed, students become fearless learners. Mistakes are a part of learning.
Students build upon these lessons in grades 4-6. Each of these areas are expanded at a grade-appropriate level. Students continue to build upon early foundations, and these concepts are regularly reinforced. They also move on to more complex numbers (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages).
With the foundations in place, and regularly reinforced, focus extends to more complex fractions, decimals, and percentages.
The Ontario mathematics curriculum builds in skills and knowledge. The intermediate years prepare students for math in high school by continuing to build upon these areas of numeracy.
Students participate in math testing in Grades 3 and 6 through the Education Quality Accountability Office (EQAO). They also write a Grade 9 EQAO test.
